How to choose a rehab centre and what to look for

Making the decision to break the cycle of addiction in your life and seek professional help for your substance abuse issues is an incredibly difficult and nerve-wracking decision to make. We have all heard of and seen rehabilitation facilities in movies, on TV and sometimes on the news. So we all think we have an idea of what to expect from a rehab clinic and how they operate.  However, most people don’t know exactly what to look for when it comes to selecting the facility that is right for your needs. Different rehabs operate in very different ways in terms of both their individual treatment programs and the facilities themselves.

Luckily we are here to give you a few pointers on how to choose a facility that is both reputable, professional and one that can most importantly help you deal with your addiction.

Goals

Before you make a decision you really need to sit down and think about what you want to get out of your time in rehab. Many facilities use different methods, programmes and specialize in different areas of recovery and having a clear idea of exactly what you want to achieve in regards to your addiction is vital. Another factor to consider is the medical implications of your recovery if you have a dual diagnosis or other underlying medical concerns.

Also setting a long term goal post will help you decide what kind of program will work best for you. Are you looking to just complete a 30-day detox programme? Or are you looking at a more long term recovery of 6-months or 1 year? Deciding what you will consider success will also help keep you motivated towards that final destination on your road to recovery.  Any rehab with integrity will also give you input on whether they think you are a good fit for their programme.

Type of facility

When it comes to the individual rehab itself, you need to decide on what type of experience you want to have and how you want to achieve your goals. There are both inpatient and outpatient facilities, inpatient facilities are usually residential and require you to stay at their center while receiving your treatment. Outpatient facilities have you stay at home or at nearby accommodation for your time there and is sometimes the preferred option for those with commitments at home or families to care for. Deciding which one will work best for you is pivotal for your decision-making process.

Most rehabs have particular expertise in different areas of addiction treatment. Some centers focus on those with dual diagnoses, while others focus on specific substances like alcohol or heroin. Choosing a facility that specializes in treating your particular circumstances can increase your chance for success and can ease your concerns about their expertise.

Treatments and Programmes

All rehabs are slightly different from one another and usually it is in their choice of treatment methodology and programmes they offer to their patients. This is a double edged sword as due to the huge variety in treatment available, it is easier than ever to find a programme that will click with you as an individual. However, it is also just as easy to find a programme that is not as suitable for your particular personality or beliefs.

For example, having somebody who is staunchly atheist or non-religious in religion or higher power focused programmes would not be the best fit for them as they would find it hard to relate. In this sense, it is very important to ask a lot of questions about their individual treatment programme in order to build a full picture of exactly what their treatments are about.

Facilities

The amenities on offer at individual rehabilitation centers can also vary wildly and normally reflect the price of the treatments they are offering. This is particularly true for residential, impatient centers, which can offer extraordinarily luxurious amenities to rival expensive hotels, whereas others offer more basic facilities and focus more on their treatment. The decision you will ultimately make usually comes down to budget and what you consider important to have around you during this time.

Remember that the facilities shouldn’t override your sense of treatment suitability for that particular rehab center. You shouldn’t feel like you are compromising on treatment quality just because the facilities or rooms are nicer. Try to focus on the real reason you are there which is to overcome your addiction issues. Ultimately finding a balance between both if these factors should determine how you proceed.

Success Stories

Another thing worth looking at are the facilities past stories of success that have come from their treatment plans. After all as they say “The proof is in the pudding” and this is equally true of rehabilitation treatment centers. Any good facility should be recording their resident’s treatment progress and usually they will ask for statements from successful residents about their experiences and how they succeeded with the help of their chosen rehab clinic.Rehab clinics will then use this information to show prospective clients that their programmes work well and naturally, any reluctance to share these stories or case studies should be treated with suspicion. After all, if they are a successful clinic they should relish the chance to demonstrate exactly why their treatment plans work ad what is good about them. Clarity offers its residents the chance to escape from their current situation by retreating to our clinic nestled in the heard of beautiful Chiang Mai, Thailand to truly focus on their individual wellbeing and recovery.
